The film is a response to the current Covid-19 pandemic crisis and reflects the authors’ experiences of self-isolation and social distancing. It weaves a Surrealist dreamlike landscape by contrasting silent and empty city spaces with the presence of an object which appears to be both organic and artificial, flesh-like and mechanical. The red cube symbolically represents the collective human pulse - a measure of the slow passing of time in isolation. It is also a metaphor for the human heart/consciousness confined to a virtual internet space, but containing memories of the world’s busy streets alive with human interactions, touch and sound. These memories are presented as layered states of consciousness, created by superimposed videos filmed during the authors’ past travels and projects. The digital nature of their representation can also be seen as symbolic of the human society exiled from its physical gathering spaces and inhabiting the virtual mechanical world of internet networks.
